Denver Comic Con @ Wazee Union

was a huge success, really great to see so many active comic artists and all at the Wazee Union! The new studio 72 still has a "Pardon our dust" sign on the door, but these works will be on display throughout the month. Also, the "Adamantium Berserker" piece is still in progress but you can see the full piece in its current stage above. I had a few comic fans/artists stop by to say that the piece was a great authentic version of Logan, and that the piece has a raw feel considering they see a great many pieces of the character. I was pushing to pay homage to the more classic era Wolverine from the uniform colors, to the "Bub, don't mess w me expression". Look for process on the finish and more comic inspired paintings soon. All pieces are aerosol on board or canvas. Thanks for viewing these works in their many stages.

Short and sweet for today, process sketches of figures that will adorn a new mural in town. In earlier posts you may have seen a quick digital sketch of these figures in their rough stages, I am now slowly bringing them  to a finish. Look for more tomorrow on Comic Con open studios and ongoing projects, thanks for viewing.

New Yorker Blown Cover Submissions

Blown Covers is a new blog created by the Art Director at the New Yorker, Francoise Mouly. It sheds light on past and present cover art, the artists creating them, and insight into covers that did not make print.. Last week James Gurney posted about this on his daily weblog, Gurney Journey, and I began creating thumbnails shortly there after for that weeks theme. More info can be found by venturing over to Tumblr and taking a look at the blog, and the current submission contest. I was honored to receive a runner-up for my submission along with many other talented artists.
Above you can see the "Revolving Door" Runner-up submission and the flip which was a portion of the critique. I submitted a number of thumbnails but we have been asked to keep submissions confidential. It can be a real challenge to send off rough ideas for contest submission, but I suppose that is the best part about a thumbnail, it should be as distinct as possible that you include your "7 W's" wisely. I am posting these images because they are already open to viewing on the Blown Covers Blog. Congrats to Joan Reilly for her winning submission, Francoise's comments and more can be seen by clicking the links. Look for more tomorrow and future submissions, back to sketching!

Denver Comic Con Open Studios!

I know I promised some interesting news for today, and this is only one piece of that news, I really want to share the other portion, but I was late getting to this post so I will share the additional information tomorrow. Coming this Saturday to the Wazee Union is the Denver Comic-Con Art and Comic walk, where you can see the new Studio 72 work space and multiple new works all comic inspired. Above is a piece roughly based on a X-Men cover by none other than one of my favorites Jim Lee, for X-Men #1, 1991. Aerosol on Canvas, 24 x 30. Please take the time to repost and let everyone know about this Saturdays event. Thanks for stopping in, New Yorker news tomorrow!

Look for more on these pieces soon, as I will be posting more progress and final works. The palette for this piece is Cad Yellow Light, Alizaron Crimson, Ultramarine Blue and Titanium White. Thanks for stopping by, very interesting news in tomorrow's post, stay tuned!

Swoozie Help

My good friend and studio mate Stereo Abstract has been putting in a good amount of work on all levels, today I had the pleasure of helping him get some hand-painted signage done. Here are some progress photos from the new Swoozie located on 6th and Fillmore. It was cold and windy on the lift, but we got the work done. More from me and current works tomorrow.

Drawing Board

I have been drawing a lot, I try to do so anytime I am not working on projects or painting and here are some that I managed to wrestle away from my hand long enough to scan them. Personal projects and client projects. Mechanical pencil on all of these, one of the kinds with the crappy erasers, so no erasing. I squint through the first half or more of each drawing. Look for posts on these images in the future. More tomorrow.

Low Key Flesh Tones w 3 Light Sources

This is a piece I have been working on that is an experiment moulding a portrait in low key flesh tones w three lights sources hitting the form. It is just about finished, well finished enough to post and here are process shots of the work. Destined for a private collector, these are almost too much fun to create and watch progress. Comprised of about 30 colors total. Thanks for stopping in.
